He reigned for only 5 and a half years and died on a campaign against the expanding Sassanian empire and its leader Shapur 1. Whether his successor, Philip the Arab had a hand in his killing as claimed by Roman sources either directly or by causing discontent or whether he died of illness, as claimed by Philip, is not kn0wn.
