ARTHUR WELLESLEY 1ST DUKE OF WELLINGTON AND ONE OF GREAT BRITAINS MILITARY HEROES. The inner case back is inscribed’Presented by the Duke of Wellington to Sam’L Phillips Jan 21st 1820. Although I have tried to research Samuel Phillips I cannot find out who he was. He must have done something very important for the’Iron’ Duke to present him with this good quality pocket watch. This incredible solid silver mans hunter pocket watch is in good condition considering its age. It winds and ticks which is probably not as important as its historical importance. This superb 3 piece full hunter watch case is made from solid English hallmarked silver. Although the marks are rubbed in one part of the case the marks on both cases date the watch to 1819. The case is in good condition showing mnor dings here and there to both covers. The case measures 5.0cms (50mm) in diameter. This beautiful watch has a bright white enamel dial which is showing some hairlines. It is however in good condition for its age. It has black painted Arabic numerals which are in excellent condition. The dial has two steel hands which have some bends in places. The dial has a key hole in the front for winding. This lovely watch has a beautiful VERGE FUSEE movement with a nice diamond endstone. It is fully signed and the the movement is marked’Des Granges late Recordon’ London. Peter DesGranges, Cockspur St, Charing Cross, successor to Louis Recordon, who was himself successor to Josiah Emery. It is numbered 9012. The movement winds and actually runs and ticks which is rare for watches of this age. It has not been checked for timekeeping. THIS IS A UNIQUE ITEM AND SHOULD REALLY BE IN A MUSEUM. HOWEVER YOU CAN OWN IT AND IN TURN HAVE YOUR OWN PIECE OF BRITISH HISTORY. Please remember that vintage watches have survived for many decades by being treated well. Vintage watches are not for wearing while doing yard work, working out, or swimming. Vintage watches cannot keep time like their quartz cousins and will need altering on average between +-2 to +-5 mins per day. They are a little more destructible than modern watches. Vintage watches also require periodic service and cleaning. Every couple of years, they would like their 20,000 mile checkup, oil change, and general service. By taking care of your vintage watch, you will have years of great service, and a quality heirloom to pass to another generation. Please do not waste anyones time if you are not interested.
