Paste jewelry18th/19th century glass was expertly treated and cut by the same fine jewellery craftsman who also worked on the true gems and it’s production was very costly. Whole suites or parures were made to represent the finest natural precious gem jewels – Marie Antoinette was a particular fan along with the very wealthiest in society who delighted in being able to wear exceptional quality jewellery – in particular this type of paste jewellery. The stones in this necklace are very beautiful – The intense watery baby blue oval pastes have great depth, fire and refraction , the smaller clear paste stones are foil backed to enable light to bounce back through the stones, enhancing their brilliance. The stones are in rubbed over settings in an intricate openwork Belle Époque designed with a pendant drop. The clasp is of a box design and original to necklace. Total centre including pendant drop is 6 cms , the drop only =3.5 cms. Length of necklace is approx 15 inches with closed clasp. Condition is excellent and with good working clasp.
