GORGEOUS RARE ANTIQUE ENAMELLED VICTORIAN MOURNING SOLID STERLING SILVER DOUBLE LOCKET MIDNIGHT BLUE ENAMEL ON FRONT/REVERSE/LOOP – BEAUTIFUL SYMBOLIC DESIGN GILT ENGRAVED SHEAF OF WHEAT & SEVEN SEED PEARLS TO FRONT – GILT INTERIOR – MAKER “M & S” – VICTORIAN PERIOD – c1876 – READY FOR USE – GREAT GIFT! On offer is this gorgeous, rare antique enamelled solid sterling silver Victorian mourning locket, with its original loop in place. The locket is oval in shape with a lovely deep shade of midnight blue enamel to the front, reverse and loop. What makes this piece extra special is the poignant design to the front of a gilt engraved sheaf of wheat with seven seed pearls. This symbol of wheat and the presence of the seed pearls are very much connected with the Victorian view of death and mourning. We believe that the wheat symbolises the divine harvest and the pearls the Kingdom of Heaven. The latter can also represent innocence and tears. There are no monograms or inscriptions. The interior is of gilt, in good condition, with a holder on both sides to contain photos. The locket itself is marked internally on both sides with the makers mark, “M & S”, which we have not been able to identify. On the bale there are two further marks which are both of “A”. If the piece is English, this will date it to 1876. If not, it is still clearly from somewhere around this time. This is an eye-catching, unusual piece – please look at the pictures for the detail. It is in reasonable antique condition overall and ready for use. You can imagine what an unusual, thoughtful gift this high quality piece of jewellery would be for you to give! “M & S” for the maker; the letter “A” for London 1876? The body of the locket is about 4cm by 3cm; the bale/. Loop is 1.3cm and it weighs 22g. As noted above, it is in reasonable antique condition and ready for use. The main points to note are in regard to the enamel: there are scratches on the front and back; a graze of about 1.3cm by 0.4cm across the top front and a small chip/graze to the left hand base reverse. Apart from that, the enamel is in pretty reasonable order. In our opinion, due to the dark colour of the enamel and the position of the small defects, they are only noticeable on close inspection. The gilt paint to the wheat is worn in places, the seven seed pearls are intact and in place. Please bear in mind that this is a genuine piece of antique silver jewellery that has been worn, as a token of memory, and loved. Both photo holders are in place internally, and the gilt is in good order. It opens easily and shuts firmly and tightly. Dark areas, marks, etc are reflections or b. Its of age-related patina.
