Shoe Horn Ball & Chain Pendant. This lovely accessory is a wonderful shoe horn with a shaped interior and curved handle The bottom section, or the tongue, is plain. The top handle is beautifully repousséd with dense leaves and flowers against a stippled background which was originally gilded and pierced so as to be hung on a chatelaine. It carries the makers mark JMLo for Johannes Martinus Lotter a Cape Town silversmith who was baptized in Cape Town on 23 December 1798 and worked in gold as well as silver between 1844 – 1879. His grandfather, father as well as several of his brothers and their descendants were also involved the gold & silversmiths trade in Cape Town. The piece does not carry a silver mark as is often the case with Cape silver of this period and does test for silver. The size and beauty of the item makes it too good to just sit in a drawer so we have hung it on a silver ball and chain to create a memorable piece of jewellery for someone who will appreciate antique quality repurposed without harming the integrity of the original. The shoe horn is approximately 67 x 38 mm and weighs 27.2 g. The Italian 925 silver rope chain is approximately 24 inches in length 3mm in diameter and weighs 22.2 g. The hollow silver ball which holds everything together is some 2.2 mm in diameter and weighs 2.2 g.
